The Best Ever Apple Crumble

The Best Ever Apple Crumble

I promise this is the best (and easiest) apple crumble ever, if I’m needing something quick to whip up for dessert on a cool winter night this is my go to. It’s warm sweet soft apple filling, and almost like a crumbly yet soft spiced Anzac biscuit top. Drool.
I make a double batch in a large Pyrex pie dish, because although it’s best served hot with ice cream it’s also wonderful cold for breakfast with a hot cup of coffee or tea.

For the filling

1 tin of pie apples, yep don’t over think it, just make it easy… trust me.

100g cold grated butter

1/2 cup sugar (any is fine but I use raw)

1 cup oats (traditional or quick are fine)

1/2 cup SR flour (don’t, whatever you do, sub for plain flour it’s just not the same)

1 tsp cinnamon

1/2 tsp ginger

1 1/2 tbs treacle (trust me it’s essential)

1 Preheat oven to 180

2 Pop the pie apples in the pie dish.

3 Put all the dry ingredients into a medium sized bowl and grate the butter over the top.

4 Rub together with your fingers until it comes together, it should look like lumpy clumpy damp sand.

5 Add the treacle, dribbling it all over the top evenly and then gently stir through the crumble mixture until it’s combined. I find a silicone spatula works best.

6 Top your apples with the mixture, very gently pressing down so they meet well, but not so you squish the crumble, you want it light and loose.

7 Bake for 30 mins and serve with ice cream or custard.

I know you might think, “oh I’ll sub the treacle out for honey” trust me it’s not the same. Treacle in all it’s dark gloopy goodness really makes this. I will accept golden syrup as a possible substitute, but if it’s not as good I will absolutely say I told you so.

If the spiced Anzac biscuit like crumble is not for you, give these a try.

- add half a cup frozen raspberries to the apples, leave out the treacle and cinnamon, add 2 tsp of good quality vanilla bean paste and the zest and one tbs juice of an orange. Dreamy!

- add half a cup of frozen blueberries to the apples, leave out the treacle, ginger and cinnamon, add 2 tsp good quality vanilla bean paste and zest and one tbs of juice from a lemon. Yum!
